What was the first Funko POP?

To answer this question, we need to take a quick look at Funko’s history!

Funko was founded in 1998 by Mike Becker. Back then, the company was called “Wacky Wobblers”. The first item produced under this name was the “Big Boy bobblehead”, modelled after the Big Boy restaurant mascot.

As the company evolved, it became increasingly popular with collectors and pop culture enthusiasts worldwide. In 2019, Funko acquired Loungefly, another beloved brand that sells distinctive backpacks and accessories with a huge range of characters.

The first figures under the Funko Pop line debuted in 2010 at San Diego Comic-Con as part of the Funko Force 2.0 collection. They were Batgirl, Green Lantern, and two Batman variants.

To this day, these initial designs are highly sought after and incredibly valuable.

Current values of the original figures:

  • Batman: £5,806
  • Batman (metallic): £2,350
  • Batgirl: £4,360
  • Green Lantern: £5,879

What is the rarest Funko POP?

The Willy Wonka Golden Ticket 2-Pack is considered the rarest Funko Pop. It includes a golden Willy Wonka and Oompa Loompa with only 10 made. In 2023, one of these packs sold for an unbelievable $210,000 (£169,540)!

Some other rare figures include:

Clockwork Orange

Funko wanted to make a full line of Clockwork Orange figures in 2012 but ran into licensing complications. Funko was threatened with legal action by Clockwork Orange’s parent company and was forced to destroy the figures.

All but 24 were destroyed. The remaining figures were signed by then CEO of Funko, Mariotti.

These Funko variants are considered some of the rarest in the world.

Estimated value: £10,800

Stan Lee Superhero Platinum Metallic

Given Stan Lee’s contribution to bringing superheroes to mainstream pop culture, it’s no surprise that he has a series of Funko POP figures. While there are many variants of Stan Lee figures, the rarest is the metallic platinum, of which only 10 were produced.

Estimated value: £14,600

Freddy Funko as Jaime Lannister

Freddy Funko is the mascot of Funko Collectibles. When Game of Thrones was released in 2012, it took pop culture by storm. The Freddy Funko as Jaime Lannister Funko was created exclusively for the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Only 12 standard and 12 glowing figures were released.

Estimated value: £8,060

Should you keep Funko POPs in their box?

This depends on your personal preference. However, if you plan to resell your figures in the future, keeping them boxed is recommended to preserve their value, especially any special edition or exclusive figures.

If you want to display them and simply enjoy the figures as they are, it’s totally fine to take them out of the box. Plus, the boxes take up a lot of space, so fewer boxes = more room for figures!
